Obituary for Jan K Waltman

Jan Kay Waltman, age 72, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, September 30, 2023 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Memorial services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2023. at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel, Stillwater, Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.

Jan was born on May 10, 1951, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, to Dale and Delois Waltman. She loved being with family and friends. She traveled to Branson, Missouri often to see relatives and enjoy the variety of music shows. She got to live her dream by living on the Waltman land that was purchased by her great grandfather, Martin Waltman in 1897. She considered herself blessed with a good family that was very dear to her. Her church family was the Perkins Church of Christ.

Jan received her bachelor's degree in Music Education from Oklahoma State University in 1976. She received her Master's Degree in Education from Northeastern State University in 1982. She taught band and music in Oklahoma schools for 30 years. She retired from Morrison Public Schools in May of 2006.

She had memberships in professional organizations: the Music Educators National Conference, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, National Educators Association, Oklahoma Education Association and the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association.

She also had memberships in the following band directors' associations of Oklahoma: Eastern Oklahoma Band Directors Association, serving one year as treasurer; Mid-East Oklahoma Band Directors Association, serving one year as a chairman; and the Northern Oklahoma Band Directors Association.

She also had memberships and enjoyed playing in post graduate bands. She played alto saxophone in the Oklahoma State University Alumni Band Association formed by OSU Band Directors Hiram Henry and Paul Montemurro. She served one year as President.

She played alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and trumpet in the Stillwater Community Band. She followed Charles Hall, her former band director, in serving many years as Music Liberian. She served under the directorship of Bill Ballenger and Wayne Bovenchen. She was also a charter member of the band's revival in 1992. She played in the Saxophone Quintet from the Stillwater Community Band. She organized D'Jazz Band made up of adult musicians in Fairfax and played the drums.

She played the baritone saxophone in the Kix Band in Perry. She later played the alto saxophone in the Great Big Band of Perry, both directed by Bill Rotter. She also played saxophone in a few musical productions in Perry, Oklahoma. She enjoyed playing tenor saxophone in the Stillwater Jazz directed by Kent Taylor, and K.G. Robinson. In this band, she had the pleasure of sitting next to her former band directors, Bill Varnum. Her cousin, Morgan Reynolds, is a member of this band. She was a charter member. She also enjoyed playing alto and tenor saxophone solos for the people in nursing homes.

In both Woodland Public Schools and Morrison Public Schools, she organized the female staff and teachers and produced a shortened version of "Sister Act." The Piano Accompaniment for both productions was by Rita Carley of Stillwater.

Jan helped organize a group of singers in her college years at the college years at the Stillwater Church of Christ. The Seven O'clock News was one of those groups. These groups sang at banquets, weddings, and special concerts in the community of Stillwater. Many life friendships were born out of this dedicated and talented group of students. At Perkins Church of Christ, she organized a group of singers and presented a Christmas Concert.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents, one niece Lesley Waltman, one sister Judy Ann Roe, and her Aunt Vivian Northen of Clarksville, Arkansas.

She is survived by her brothers, James and his wife Vicki of Tulsa and Jay Waltman and his wife Debby of Sand Springs; nieces Shay Featherson and husband Darryl of Jenks; Crystal Bruton and husband Eddie of Sand Springs; nephews Michael Waltman of Tulsa and Matt Waltman and wife Tiffany of Mannford; great nieces and great nephews, D. J. Featherston, Alyssa Featherston, and Corbyn Featherston of Jenks; Mason Bruton, Dylan Bruton, Tristin Bruton, and Addisyn Bruton of Sand Springs, Emily Waltman and Logan Waltman of Tulsa; Kobi Waltman and Kambri Waltman of Mannford and many cousins whose friendships were valued.
